BioRaj FUSICONT: An Effective Bio-Fungicide for The Management of The Devastating Wilt Disease
The rapid spread of the Panama wilt disease caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense tropical race 4 (FocTR4) fungus, threatened the global banana cultivation of several countries like Australia, Indonesia, Taiwan, and China during the last few years and have incurred heavy economical loss due to the disease.
Also, Cumin is the most important seed spices crop and is being cultivated in the large area of Rajasthan state. However, the cumin crop is highly prone to wilt disease caused by Fusarium sp. And cumin farmers of the state suffer heavy losses every year.
The spores of Fusarium can enter through cuts and wounds of leaf, stem, and roots which may cause by heavy rain, hail storm, cattle, insects, nematodes, etc. once the spore enters into the plant, it starts to germinate and multiply by consuming vascular tissue as its food. Gradually the fungi multiply and occupy the major portion root system and stem part. This affects the nutritional uptake and its distribution in other parts of the plant, eventually, the plant gets collapses and dies off. There are a large number of species belonging to Fusarium oxysporum which infect the number of economical crops and cause yield loss. The conventional methods recommended to control the disease by means of chemical fungicides has limitation to prevent the disease at a significant level. Also, inpouring large quantity of such chemicals in the soil is not feasible and may affect soil fertility by harming beneficial soil micro flora.
Present Technology
The outcome of extensive research and field trials by ICAR institutes regarding Fusarium wilt disease and its management revealed that one of the Trichoderma strains named Trichoderma reesei a novel strain obtained from high-stress rhizosphere is highly effective against pathogenic Fusarium oxysporum fungi. Consequently, this strain is cultured in a modified CSR medium and formulate in a unique way to get an effective bio-fungicide. Studies also revealed that this formulation is the effective bio-fungicide available in the country for the management of banana wilt disease caused by Tropical race 4. The formulation has been validated in laboratory and under field trials in hot spot areas. The formulation was subjected to pre-commercialization evaluation over a large area of 273 acres in the hot spot regions of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar with about 85 to 92% success in the disease management as observed for the past two years 2018-2020. The formulation has also been validated for the control of cumin wilt disease in the Jodhpur hot spot region under the collaborative doctorate program research with Banasthali University. The product has also shown positive results in the control of race 1 banana Panama wilt in the Andhra Pradesh in the variety Amritpani and in Tamil Nadu in the variety Karpooravalli under the ICAR-AICRP program, as claimed by the Institute.

The productivity of commercial crops particularly high value horticultural crops in sodic soils even after reclamation remains a challenge globally. The normal lands are also witnessing decline in productivity due to the fatigue of the green revolution. Given the negative environmental impacts of chemical fertilizers and increasing costs, the use of PGPR (plant growth promoting Rhizobacteria) is thus being considered as an alternative or a supplemental way to increase the productivity of sodic soil and thereby reducing the use of chemicals in agriculture. Currently ,there are no efficient strains available to perform under sodic conditions where the soil pH is more than 8.5.Though considerable amount of microbial isolates are available in the country as bio fertilizers and bio control agents ,for soils of pH 7.0-8.5,they are highly location specific and are mostly based on single potential isolate.Addressing the above mentioned issue along with the help of ICAR ,this innovative project has developed a potential bio-growth enhancer based on integration of the dynamic microbial consortia (Bacillus spp. & Trico derma spp.) with dynamic culture media for increasing the productivity of crops grown in sodic soils as well as in normal soil.
